Recession Proof Your Life

One of the first lessons every adult learns as they go through life is that no matter now bad (or good) the economy is doing, if you wait a while, it will swing the other way. If you´re a home owner, or if you´re looking to buy a home, knowing the state of the economy can be an important tool.

But regardless of your home ownership status, there are a series of easy to implement steps you can take to help insulate yourself as much as possible from the swings in your local economy. Here is a few great tips for keeping yourself level while everyone around you is riding the economic roller coaster.

  • Do your best to stay out of debt. As we all know, this is much easier said than done. Most of us have multiple credit cards with varying balances, some with high interest rates, others with really high interest rates. If you smell trouble on the horizon, the best thing you can do is to try to get out of debt as quickly as possible. Try to find one card with a high limit and a low rate and consolidate your debt. Check on your insurance and retirement plans and make sure they are in check. You don´t want to be caught with more bills then you can pay if your income dries up.

  • Watch for warning signs. If you can anticipate a recession, you can do a better job of preparing for it and withstanding it. This applies to all parts of your life, not just money management. If you are thinking about investing a huge wad of dough on those home improvements but you heard there could be an economic downturn on the way, you might want to put those improvements off for a bit. The same goes for your job. While changing jobs to something a little more risky is fine when the economy is booming, it isn´t such a good idea when it isn´t. By having a good fix on what is to come economically, you can be better prepared.

  • Look for the in-demand job. One way to make yourself indispensable, even during an economic recession, is to make sure that you´re doing a job your employer can´t live without. If you´ve always been interested in a field that is in high demand, go back to school to learn that trade. The more education you have, the less chance you have of being laid off during tight economic times. If you make yourself unfireable to your bosses, you can stick around a lot longer than an employee who sat around and did nothing.

  • What goes around, comes around. It can be difficult to remember that every recession, and every depression, has an end to it, but they do. The same goes for every economic upswing. Everything works in a cycle so don´t get too attached to either extreme. The tough times may feel like they are never going to end, but they will, you just can´t give up.

  • Expand your skill set. This goes back to looking for an in-demand job above. If you can expand the number of things you can do, again, make yourself as unfireable as possible, a recession will have much less of an impact on you. Make sure your resume reflects these upgraded skills and showcase your dedication to education and improving yourself. It will impress not just your current employer but your future employer, as well.

Economic recessions are a fact of life. They come and they go and the only guarantee is that they will be coming again in a few years. The last economic downturn during the early 1990´s was followed by the longest economic expansion in American history. The whole thing works on a cycle. As long as you keep that in mind, you have already won half the battle.

The rest of the fight is up to you. Follow these helpful tips and when the economy seems to be down for the count next time, you´ll be in a safe, secure place while your friends, neighbors and co-workers are scrambling.
